UNESCO also determined that the Mediterranean diet “could contribute to raising awareness of the significance of healthy and sustainable food related practices in other parts of the world, while encouraging intercultural dialogue, testifying to creativity and promoting respect for cultural, environmental, and biological diversity.

Following a Mediterranean diet means not just adopting some dieting rules, cooking and eating based on food selections, but it involves a complete lifestyle change, based on the social and cultural aspects typical of Mediterranean countries, such as the importance of regular physical activity, adequate rest, and conviviality.2
